The news on Monday of the short-listed finalists for the 2013 Digital Challenge highlighted three new categories to complement the long established focus on infrastructure investments.
New this year are categories for Open Data projects, Digital Innovation and Digital Skills. These categories arose out of a change in the awards programme - an Open Nomination phase where anyone could nominate the projects they felt deserved recognition.
Analysing the entries we found nearly enough to justify an additional category related to network quality - and on current trends this factor will almost certainly feature in the 2014 edition.
The three new categories do however signal the determination to crack on with exploiting new-found digital capabilies - even if within the UK the capacity of most local broadband access is constrained by the use of telephone lines or mobile cellular utilities.
